I continue to be amazed by the lack of interest of quick and small commercial printers in automatic PDF creation programs. These are special software programs, usually licensed for a small monthly fee, that automatically create a PDF file from the native application when a customer transmits a file over the Internet. The special driver makes packaging a customer created file for printing much easier since it includes the fonts and the graphics used by the customer in the PDF file.

Getting a uniform PDF file is important if a printer plans to automate his workflow. With today's technology, a PDF file can be dropped into a "hot folder" where it is automatically preflighted. Many file problems can be automatically corrected using hot folder technology. Work can move through the prepress department faster as the file is automatically prepared for output. The technology can also recognize errors that require manual corrections and automatically notify someone by email that the file needs to be fixed. Many of the low cost print providers selling over the Internet use PDF-based automation technology to lower their costs.

I find automatic PDF creation programs being used by very large commercial printing and digital printing companies. Because these companies deal with such a large volume of files, having the ability to automate the work on customer created files saves time and money for both the printer and the customer.
