Braidy Bates immediately formed a smile, and her voice perked up as she described her first sports memory.

As a child at the summer all-comers meets at Hayward Field, Bates would stare down the track at the only familiar faces. After the starter's pistol was shot - scaring half the competitors - she would sprint toward her parents. Then, it was time to go play in the sand.
