Rick Metsger, Kate Brown and Vicki Walker are all Democrats, all state senators.

They're all baby boomers who started their political careers in the 1990s as legislators and, after years of frustration in the minority, tasted life in the Senate's majority and are ready for their first crack at statewide office.

So all three are running for secretary of state - specifically the May 20 Democratic nomination so they can face the sole Republican candidate, former Eugene TV anchor Rick Dancer, in November.

Paul Damien Wells of Newberg is a fourth Democrat filed as a candidate for the May primary. Wells has not actively campaigned or raised money.

One other Democratic candidate, state Sen. Brad Avakian, dropped out of the race last month when he was named the successor to resigning state Labor Commissioner Dan Gardner.
