The federal money spigot opened Monday as economic stimulus payments began showing up in bank accounts across the country. They will continue being disbursed electronically and by regular mail throughout the year.

It's the first in a one-two punch to stimulate economic growth during a time when analysts warn of recession and consumers struggle with increasing costs for gas, groceries and home financing. Taxpayers will get a cash infusion now and businesses willing to invest in equipment will be eligible for significant tax breaks next April.

Individuals making less than $75,000 will receive up to $600, while married taxpayers filing jointly with an income under $150,000 can expect up to $1,200, with eligible children under 17...
