Under pressure to keep legal fees low and attorney pay competitive, San Diego-based Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP overhauled its pay system for associates this month.

The law firm created 14 levels of associate compensation based on merit and productivity. The new pay scale is retroactive to Jan. 1.

Under the new system, first-year associates can make $145,000 at 1,950 hours and $160,000 at 2,100 hours.
