"You've gotta have heart!" said Ann Reinking to a group of eager students at Broadway Theatre Dance Workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After an hour of rigorous work on Bob Fosse's choreography for "Bye Bye Blackbird" in the TV special Liza With a Z, the dancers were clustered around their legendary guest teacher, listening intently. "I want to see how you make the moves your own," said Reinking. "Put in your own personality." As each line of dancers moved to the front, they loosened up and took risks, inventing, laughing as they added a shoulder accent, arm swing, or head roll. "That was great!" Reinking exclaimed. "I loved what I saw!" Throughout all of her classes and rehearsals during the program she stressed the emotional input required for dramatic projection.
