This rather large volume carries with it a certain mustiness--a scent of memories from a frenetic past that have long been sealed away and have only recently been exposed to the atmosphere of the present political environment. It reflects the fact that nearly two decades have now transpired since Allan Gotlieb served as the Canadian ambassador to the United States. The world of international diplomacy that he sets forth for our inspection looks considerably different from that of the contemporary era. It is a world of pre-FTA and continuing Cold War. It is populated by political figures like Pierre Trudeau and Ronald Reagan who have since passed from the political stage but whose images are retained in our collective national memories.
