In 1884, at the age of nineteen, James Teit emigrated from the Shetland Islands to Spences Bridge, British Columbia, where he took up a range of hunting and guiding jobs, learned several Native languages, became active in representing B.C. Indians politically, and, almost incidentally, built a significant career as one of Canada's fledgling professional ethnographers. At first glance, this is an elegant coffee-table book, featuring biographical memorabilia, photographs of Teit's many consultants in the Tahltan community, and catalogue photos of material objects collected in his groundbreaking work.
