The most common problem plaguing law firms is paper. It's everywhere--files, correspondence, discovery, transcripts, mail. In some offices, it seems as if every inch of space is filled with paper.
To some lawyers, paper piles are a badge of honor, evidence that a lawyer is busy and in demand. Yet massive amounts of paperwork are also a disaster waiting to happen. Piles of paper make it more difficult to locate information quickly and increase the chance that you'll miss deadlines. They're also easily lost to fire, flood, and theft.
"Document management" is an amorphous term, yet it is at the heart of every law office's operations. How efficiently a firm tames the paper tiger can be the difference between winning and losing cases, as well as between making a profit and losing money.
Filing, storing, indexing, and making documents easily accessible are critical to efficient firm management. For a solo or small-firm practice, enforcing a few basic protocols may help bring some order to the chaos.
