Now that Petco Park has had its trial run with the Aztec Invitational baseball tournament, those monitoring the transportation have a better idea of what to expect when the Padres officially open the new Downtown ballpark next month.

More than 40,000 people attended the first game of the San Diego State University Aztec baseball tourney March 11--17,000 of whom used the San Diego Trolley, resulting in an overloaded system and empty parking lots around the park.

Those involved with the Downtown transportation plan said the invitational was a skewed representation of what is normally expected on game days.

Ace Parking Management, Inc., working under an agreement with the Padres, said it had 2,000 vacant stalls next to the ballpark.
