"There has never been a better time to study Spanish fiction." So proclaims Samuel Amago in his study of metafictional narrative by six contemporary Spanish novelists. As the successor to Robert C. Spires's Beyond the Metafictional Mode (1984), True Lies modernizes and particularizes Spires's groundbreaking work. Whereas Spires anchored his understanding of metafiction in linguistically defined modes, Amago turns to an optimistic version of postmodernism in his reading of the evolving strategies of the self-referential novel. While Spires saw Cervantes, Quevedo, Galdós and Unamuno as forerunners to such writers as Benjamín Jarnés, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, Alvaro Cunqueiro, Juan and Luis Goytisolo, and Carmen Martín Gaite, Amago considers Jorge Luis Borges the undisputed inspiration for metafictional novels published in Spain...
