Emile Nelligan (1879-1941) figure incontestablement comme etant le plus important poete canadien de tous les temps, et sa place en tant qu'ecrivain national serait aisement comparable a celle de Walt Whitman aux Etats-Unis ou Arthur Rimbaud en France. Des poemes celebres et tres beaux de Nelligan comme >, >, > ont a maintes reprises ete mis en chansons et son oeuvre a donne lieu a un tres grand nombre d'ouvrages savants et de theses, en plus d'avoir influence d'autres poetes quebecois importants comme Alfred Desrochers et Alain Grandbois.

La vie de Nelligan fut tragique. Ne d'un pere irlandais--qu'il detestait--et d'une mere francophone qu'il venerait, Emile Nelligan grandit a Montreal et est considere comme un eleve mediocre, reveur et exalte.
