Green building is gaining ground in the Magnolia State, especially on commercial projects where "green" is not only good for the environment but creates long-term savings through reduced use of energy, water and other resources.

The primary industry group promoting green building in the country is the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a coalition of leaders from across the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. USGBC has developed a rating system for green buildings called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). It provides guidelines for what criteria buildings must meet in order to be certified.

A number of major contractors in Mississippi including Harrell Construction Company, Charles N. White Construction and W.G. Yates & Sons Construction are working on LEED projects. And a lot more are coming down the road, said Perry Richardson, an architect with Canizaro Cawthon Davis Architects, Jackson, who is president of the Mississippi Chapter of the USGBC.

"Currently there are two LEED-certified buildings in Mississippi," Richardson said. "There are also 25 buildings registered to be certified and many more in conception. It is an impressive list of great projects...
