When General Motors moved up the launch of its redesigned full-sized trucks for the 2007 model year, GM marketers faced a quandary. Without prototypes of the vehicles, marketers had nothing to photograph for TV commercials, print ads and promotional brochures.

"You can imagine the angst among our marketing staffs and agencies,'' says Sam Mancuso, then GM's director of corporate marketing and advertising.

But GM had plenty of computer-aided design information on the revamped pickups and SUVs. Using technology called computer-generated imaging - CG for short - GM converted the data into pictures of the vehicles. Those images formed the company's first product catalog that relied entirely on CG.
