Article Excerpt ON JUNE 2, 2002, VIRGINIA CRIST WAS ADMITTED TO ST. VINCENT HOSPITAL FOR HEART BY-PASS SURGERY.
Dr. David Dean performed the surgery. After surgery, it was determined that Virginia had contracted Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). On June 2, 2004, Virginia filed suit against Dr. Dean, the hospital, and other individual defendants involved in her care and treatment, alleging medical negligence, breach of contract, and breach of informed consent. She also claimed that the doctrine of Res Ipsa Loquitur (RIL) applied on the basis that the infection was the result of a breach in sterile technique in the operating room and would not have happened had there not been a breach of sterile technique.
