I know aerobic exercise helps build up energy for performing, but I'm not sure which method is best. When I'm in rehearsals, should I do the stationary bike? Or swim?

I'm glad you're planning ahead. Exercise physiologist Dr. Matthew Wyon says 85 percent of technique class does not require the stamina you need to perform today's demanding choreography. Aerobic training during slow periods helps to prepare you and prevent fatigue, a major cause of injuries. Every dancer has different preferences. In general, high-impact activities where you are pounding your joints--like jogging or jumping rope--can create overuse injuries, such as tendonitis. Other problematic workouts include riding the stationary bike with high resistance, which can add bulk in muscular dancers; spinning with no resistance, which can stress vulnerable kneecaps; "power" walking that places excess stress on...
