A new translation of Hamsun's Nobel Prize-winning masterpiece, Markens grode, has long been overdue. The same year the novel appeared (1917), the Englishman W. W. Worster translated it into English. This novel is perhaps the most difficult of Hamsun's works to translate, and maybe that is the reason we have had to wait so many years for a new translation. The epic nature of the work, with its Biblical overtones of style, earthy atmosphere, and dialectical expressions (like dokker), are difficult to translate into another language. Faithful to the Norwegian original, Prof. Lyngstad still manages to get the meaning across in fluid, colloquial English, a unique achievement...
