This collection of essays, written by some of today's most noted international Ibsen scholars, is a festskrift published in honor of Professor Asbjorn Aarseth on the occasion of his retirement. There are eighteen essays on Ibsen in all, plus an introductory essay by Atle Kittang that provides an overview of Aarseth's distinguished career in both the Comparative and Nordic Literature Departments at the University of Bergen. Although Aarseth is also known for several important general works on literary theory and history, his Ibsen research stands out (there are fifty-four separate items on Ibsen-related topics listed in this volume's bibliography of Aarseth's forty years of research). It is thus entirely fitting that a festskrift in his honor would include contributions from so many Ibsen scholars from Norway and abroad. The influence of his work is truly global; the contributions to this anthology have flowed in from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, England, Canada, the United States, China, and Iran, as well as from many colleagues in Norway.
