Questions of identity currently fascinate historians of early modern Sweden. This interest in identity stems from present politics, as Swedes and Finns debate how European political projects change familiar conjunctions of nation and government, but also from an international historical fashion for works in which authors map how the discourses and representations of communities respond to ideological and political imperatives.

Matthias Legner pursues such questions of identity in his Faderneslandets ratta beskrivning, a revised version of his dissertation at Stockholm University.
