Tornqvist's stated aim with this book is the need to redress the frequent scholarly reliance on biographical, comparative, psychological, ideological, and thematic aspects when analyzing Ibsen's work. Hence, Tornqvist concentrates on dramatic construction as it is precisely that which, according to the scholar, motivates Ibsen's position as a world dramatist. Consequently, the perspective from which Tornqvist approaches Ibsen is that of the virtual recipient of the dramas, and hence he focuses only on the published versions of the plays.
