...stated in the foreword (7)--an international Holberg conference. However, eighteen of the twenty contributors to the volume are Norwegians and two are from Denmark, which hardly justifies the above claim and clearly ignores the fact that there are at least few Holberg scholars outside these two countries.

Obviously there had been no precisely defined theme for this conference, hence the title of the proceedings being "The Manifold Holberg" with contributions about the author not only as a playwright but also--as stated in the foreword--as an essayist, a political thinker, a feminist, and a philosopher.

The title of the opening essay, "Holbergs forhold til Bergen--og til kvinner" [Holberg's Relationship to Bergen--and to Women], indicates the sorely missed thematic coherence of the volume.
