...Mortensen's work dealt with the sensitive issue of the literary and personal defenses used by the fledgling author-in-spe as he struggled to survive, physically and mentally, from the time he came to Copenhagen as fourteen-year-old until his breakthrough with the novel Improvisatoren and his first booklet of Eventyr a decade and a half later. Some of the wisest of insights on Andersen's personality may be found in Svanen og Skyggen, and the layered construction of Andersen's self and reasons for his outrageous behavior are shown to fit into a sad but logical pattern. I am sorry to say that Tilfoldets poesi neither exhibits the concision nor that former insight. It rehashes points already made in Svanen og Skyggen (indeed, with some of the same illustrative examples) without carrying the argument forward or upward or inward. If taken seriously, academically, Tilfoldets poesi will give the reader a much less favorable impression of Mortensen's talent. How...
