Celebrity first pitch Longtime Eugene baseball icon Mel Krause, 80, will throw out the first pitch at the opening day ceremonies for the local Cal Ripken baseball season. The event will take place Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Babe Ruth Baseball complex in west Eugene, just south of Meadowview School, and is open to the public. From the 1950s to the early '80s, Krause was University of Oregon baseball coach, North Eugene and Sheldon High School coach, and a Eugene Emeralds player. He still holds the Northwest League records for most years played in the league (seven, 1954-56 with Salem and 1957-61 with Eugene) and most lifetime NWL games played (750).

Kidsports Klassic soccer The spring season scheduling meeting for coaches of grade 5-12 teams is Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the South Eugene High School cafeteria.

Oakway golf opener The Oakway women's golf club will begin its 2008 season this Thursday with a 7:30 a.m. meeting at the clubhouse. All nine- and 18-hole golfers are welcome. For information, call 484-1927 or 485-4918.

Hidden Valley league Cottage Grovecentss Hidden Valley Golf Course is getting ready for its Industrial League season starting April 28. The first captians' meeting is April 14. This is a nine-hole evening league for teams of four players and two or more alternates. Teams play on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays for 10 weeks, followed by playoffs. Most teams are sponsored by their employer. The sponsorship fee is $45.
