Kriya Beck always knew she would be a hair stylist when she grew up.
"There was never any question," says the 24-year-old, who landed what she calls her dream job - a chair at the Gervais Salon in the Fifth Street Public Market - when she completed her training about two years ago. "For me, a career in hair styling wasn't a matter of if, it was just a matter of when."
One of the reasons for her certainty was her father, Dahman Beck, who worked at both hair styling and house painting - and played and sang in his own rock band - as he raised his three children.
"I grew up in the salons - my dad worked in a lot of places - and that helped me develop an eye for styling," Kriya Beck recalls. "Even when I was little, I would get involved in conversations with his clients, getting to know them. And I watched everything he did."
The first real haircut she ever did was his.
"He told me everything to do - it took me two hours," she says.
Just as Kriya followed him into cosmetology, Beck's other offspring also have followed his lead.
His son, Abel, 29, works as a house painter - after several years spearheading a hip-hop band of his own.
Younger daughter Summer, 19, now works as a receptionist at Gervais as she ponders her future career path.
Throughout history, up until even a generation or two ago, that kind of "apple not falling far from the tree" career choice was common.
