We must wake up about Tibet

How many people have to die in Tibet before we sit up and take notice? Is there a magic morbidity number like the airline industry uses where they won't correct a problem until a thousand people have died?

There seems to be a consensus among countries slated to attend the Beijing Olympics that it would create a hardship for the athletes if they couldn't compete. For God's sake, what's more important: sports competitions or peoples' lives?

The world has its priorities backwards. Sports are big business, but they should pale in comparison to the value of a human life. Tibet has been an occupied country since 1958. How many of the countries that will have athletes in the Olympics are currently using military force to occupy a foreign country? Embarrassing, isn't it?

Traveling to Tibet and China in 2001 was a real eye-opener for me. I came away feeling China's poor, at some point, would rise up, demanding their fair share, albiet with significant loss of life. I felt Tibet wouldn't be free until China was. Tibet's catalytic role raises awareness, creating change for the entire region.
