Spring practice opens for Oregon on Tuesday with a quarterback battle few anticipated six months ago.

Nathan Costa sits atop the depth chart, or "practice order," the preferred terminology of UO coach Mike Bellotti. But while Costa remains the heir apparent to departed senior Dennis Dixon, his ascendency won't be as smooth as the Ducks might have thought last fall.

Five months ago today, Costa tore ligaments in his left knee during practice. When Dixon was hurt in November, it wasn't Costa who relieved him, but senior Brady Leaf and Costa's classmates, Cody Kempt and Justin Roper. And after Roper's four-touchdown performance in Oregon's Sun Bowl victory over South Florida, the Ducks have the potential for a genuine quarterback controversy.

"I'm excited now," UO junior tight end Ed Dickson said. "Roper showed what he can do, and that really pushes Nate."

Costa won't be available for contact drills this month as he continues regaining...
