MUW plays important, unique role in preparing business leaders.

COLUMBUS -- Does the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) play a particularly important role in preparing the future women business leaders of Mississippi?

A good person to ask is Ricki Rayner Garrett, a 1973 alumna and a member of the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning.

"Historically MUW has played an important role in educating women and preparing there for leadership," said Garrett who has been named as MUW's first Woman of the Year. "If you look around the state at women in leadership, many are MUW graduates. I think as more and more women move into the corporate world, and into other kinds of leadership in the state, the W will play an ever bigger role in making sure women are prepared."

Garrett said at the time she attended the W, most colleges didn't have women in leadership at all either in the administration or student body. By attending the then all-female institution, Garrett and others were able to get leadership training much sooner than young women in coed institutions.
