Five years ago this month, I went to the doctor's office to check out a bad cold. When I left, I learned that something else may be going on--something that gave no clue of a problem. Following a referral to another physician and a battery of tests, I learned that I had hypertension.

I was surprised because I was only in my 30s and I didn't smoke. While I didn't have many of the lifestyle issues associated with hypertension, I had one big negative--a strong family history of heart disease, most notably two grandmothers who died of strokes in their early 40s.
