According to the calendar, spring started nine days ago. But on Friday it still looked like January outside.

Snow, hail, rain and wind swept away dreams of a sunny end to spring break while punishing optimistic gardeners who had dared plant their seeds so early in the season.

So what's the deal with this persistent winter weather?

"It's nature," meteorologist Rodger Nelson said. "Every year is different; every month is different; every day is different."

Apparently, this year "different" means "cold."

Case in point: Average daily temperatures for the month of March have been 2 degrees colder than normal...
