Sherman Hanna was a long-haired, barefoot hippie MBA student in Cornell University's Business School back in 1970 when Professor Katey Walker in the College of Human Ecology needed statistical assistance with her research on time use. Sherman provided the needed help on that project. He has continued to assist colleagues and students over the years, advising on research, encouraging attendance and participation in conferences, chairing dissertations, and offering advice on their careers.

In the 1970s, the subject matter of Consumer Economics and Public Policy was not entirely new territory for Sherman. His undergraduate thesis in economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology was on the negative income tax and work effort. However,...
