Throughout his long film career, Luis Bunuel kept the Catholic Church in his sights as a favorite object of excoriating lampoon. But the sacrileges periodically perpetrated by the director in works from L'Age d'or to Viridiana, along with the more intensive immersion in all matters holy in Nazarin and Simon of the Desert, seem like a warmup for The Milky Way (La Voie lactee), which appeared in 1969. Bunuel was nearing seventy when he shot the film, and one can see the change from the younger artist whose greatest impulse was to draw moustaches on every sacred cow...
