ISSUE: How closely do you supervise residents working under your supervision? If you are not appropriately monitoring their performance you may find yourself liable for their mistakes. That is what happened to the physician in this case who, after making the initial incision into a patient's uterus, allowed a third-year resident working under his supervision, to make the incision across the uterus. What had been characterized as an "urgent" C-Section went from urgent to an "emergency" C-Section, before the resident made such a deep incision into the patient's uterus that the patient's baby girl was delivered with a two inch scar on her forehead as a result of the resident cutting too deeply into the uterus. The patient's physician was held responsible.
