Compared to the critical attention devoted to the novels and poetry of Canada, the Canadian short story continues to be slighted, so Canadian teachers, readers, and critics will welcome this generous collection of essays by European scholars. Canadians will also be pleased, and many no doubt surprised, to see that their high estimation of the short story is shared by this select company of discerning European critics. Canadian critics, especially, should welcome, perhaps with irony and even envy, this evidence--a big, handsomely produced book--of the international appreciation of the Canadian short story, appreciation that has often been touted but never demonstrated. Here now is the material evidence, and shame on us that no such collection of practical essays on the Canadian short story has ever been published in Canada.
