John C. Courtney, one of Canada's most respected political scientists, retired in 2004 after four decades at the University of Saskatchewan. Courtney produced respected and widely read works on political leadership, especially party leadership selection; representative and electoral systems; and Royal Commissions. A conservative by disposition, Courtney advised caution in assessing proposed reforms to Canada's politics throughout his career. This richly deserved festschrift presents nine essays from political scientists who honor Courtney and also advance the study of his favored subjects. This review focuses on five chapters especially pertinent in Canada's current politics.

Essays on party leaders and leadership selection remind us that the choosing of party leaders, and these leaders' survival in office, remain open questions in Canada. R. K.
