Karole Armitage had her hands full as 2008 got under way. Her company, Armitage Gone! Dance, was rehearsing for its February gig at the Joyce. She was juggling two operas that she was directing for spring openings, one in New York and one in Naples. And her first Broadway musical, Passing Strange, was in rehearsal.

Broadway musical?

Eclectic though she is, it's probably the last genre you'd expect to find Armitage working in. Yes, opera is a first cousin to the musical. And yes, she's always dipped freely into pop culture, working on Madonna's music videos and collaborating with fashion designers. But the middlebrow world of Broadway seems like an odd fit for someone who came up dancing Balanchine, switched to Cunningham, then combined those vocabularies in choreography that won her the sobriquet "punk ballerina."
