Gravity plays a huge role in any style of dance. Although it can sometimes act as our friend in modern techniques, in ballet it impedes our rise to releve and into the air. We have to work constantly to overpower this strong pull toward the center of the earth while maintaining balance in a controlled, graceful manner.

But when you overcome gravity by hitting a perfect balance, it can be elating. Like Princess Aurora during Sleeping Beauty's Rose Adagio, it feels like you could stay there forever, even though it is really only a few moments. These thrilling seconds can be surprising to the audience and even to you.
