Sometimes an entrepreneur with a startup business plan may need a good networking connection or an informative resource.

Other times, he or she may need a good cheerleader, or a life coach.

Claire Nelson and Liz Blondy have designed Open City to be all those things for aspiring shopkeepers and small-business owners looking at Detroit as a place to build their dreams.

"Liz and myself had both just opened new businesses in Detroit, and we basically talked each other through a lot of that process,'' said Nelson, co-founder of the group and co-owner of the Bureau of Urban Living, a home and office accessories store on Canfield Street.

"We wanted other entrepreneurs to get an opportunity for that same kind of mentorship and encouragement,'' Nelson said.

Open City is a new group of mainly young entrepreneurs and small-business owners who meet monthly at Cliff Bell's restaurant at 2030 Park Ave. to exchange ideas....
