Allianz in market for firms

Allianz Global Investors, parent of PIMCO and Nicholas-Applegate, is looking to acquire other asset managers, said Marna Whittington, COO of Allianz Global and CEO of Nicholas-Applegate. She would not identify any firms.

Ms. Whittington said the recent credit turmoil may result in buying opportunities. "We do think there's going to be opportunities out there in terms of products and in terms of talent. We're quietly looking,'' she said.

Sovereign funds eyed

CalPERS and CalSTRS would be barred from future investing in private equity funds and companies partially or wholly owned by some sovereign wealth funds under a bill sponsored by California Assemblyman Alberto Torrico. The bill pertains to sovereign wealth funds of countries that are not signatories of five of six specified international human rights treaties.

If passed, the two jumbo pension funds would have to evaluate the private equity firms...
