International Franchise Association President Don J. DeBolt visited San Diego early this month as part of a promotional tour in California, Arizona, and Nevada before the IFA's annual convention in Las Vegas March 6-9. He sat down with the San Diego Business Journal to discuss franchising trends and franchise growth areas in San Diego.

QUESTION: Is San Diego a growth area for franchising?

ANSWER: Absolutely.

Q: Where is the fastest franchise growth in San Diego--fast food?

A: I would presume it is. That's always going to be one of the most buoyant, vibrant area of franchising.

Q: The cost of living is so expensive and one wonders how San Diego can attract small business owners and employees, frankly, to work at all these franchises.

A: They said the same thing 10 years ago. One of the things we've been very much in front of is the whole immigration issue, because yes, many of these restaurants, many of these franchised businesses are going to need entry level workers and we're only going to get them on a consistent basis if we have a way for people coming from Mexico, South America, to be here.

Q: But still, franchising has to pay you enough to afford to live in the places where the franchises are...
