Answer: Nothing yet, but both soon may become San Diego's newest sister cities.
The Jalalabad effort is being organized by a group of citizens led by a local attorney, while the push for Shannon, Ireland is fueled by the somewhat unorthodox prompting of Mayor Dick Murphy.
Steve Brown, a 30-year veteran of Luce Forward, organized a committee of about 25 citizens (one-third of whom are Afghan expatriates) last summer. The group has been working through the San Diego International Sister Cities Corporation and the city to get approval to make Jalalabad San Diego's 15th sister city--adding it to a list of cities as far flung as Yokohama, Japan; Tema, Ghana; and Vladivostok, Russia.
Dave Edick Jr., president of the sister cities corporation, said he will approve the Jalalabad relationship and recommend it be approved by San Diego City Council, probably at the end of April.
Mayor Murphy has already sent a letter to the mayor of Jalalabad, inviting him to participate in the program...
