The soaring price of crude oil has renewed interest in exploratory drilling in Southeast Michigan.

Drilling is complete and a 130-foot oil derrick was dismantled last month in Livonia after work crews for Traverse City-based West Bay Exploration Co. reached potential reserves of fossil fuels it detected by seismic equipment at about 3,800 feet.

Testing is under way to determine what the site contains, said Gary Gottschalk, West Bay vice president.

A successful drill - one that uncovers a profit-turning quantity of oil or natural gas - can mean tens of millions of dollars in revenue for West Bay.

"In Southeast Michigan so far, we're about 90 percent successful in drilling,'' he said. "It's fairly well known where the line of (prehistoric) reef growth is through the region, and following along that in your exploration we've generally found at least 200,000 barrels at each (site).''
