A Eugene call center told employees on Thursday that the center will close on April 30, eliminating 237 jobs.

Semperian is a subsidiary of General Motors Acceptance Corp., the financing arm of automaker General Motors. GMAC opened the center, formerly known as AccuTel, in 1999 after an exhaustive search for a site in the Pacific time zone.

The layoffs are a blow to the local economy, which already is in a slowdown, said Brian Rooney, labor economist with the state Employment Department.

A GMAC spokesman said the decision to close the call center was not directly related to troubles in consumer credit markets.

"It falls under our need to continue to examine how we operate and to adjust our business...
