Hoping the purchases will lead to long-sought downtown redevelopment, the Eugene City Council on Wednesday tentatively endorsed buying three key properties for more than $5 million.

Councilors voted 7-0 to support the proposed acquisition of the Centre Court building and Washburne building at Broadway and Willamette Street from Eugene landlords Tom Connor and Don Woolley. Councilors are charting a new course on redevelopment, following last fall's rejection by voters of a ballot measure to spend up to $40 million in urban renewal funds in the city center.

If plans proceed, the city in June would pay Connor and Woolley $4.7 million...
