As an Australian living in New Zealand I was often asked, 'What's an Aussie doing living here? Usually the traffic is all the other way'. My reply: 'I'm here as part of Australia's aid program to third world countries'. It never got a laugh, but that didn't stop me using it.

We know New Zealand is not a third world country. In fact, if it wasn't for the funny way they talk, the North and South Islands could be just another state or two of Australia (and almost were). So why this attitude of mine to our cuzzie-bros across the ditch?

Quite simply, it was because I had spent sixteen months working for an engineering firm in the North Island and witnessed the horrors of a deregulated labour market first hand. And this particular firm was not a backyard operation. One of their biggest clients was Bluescope Steel...
