Please help! I have wide feet and very low arches. This makes pointe work extremely difficult. Is there any way to strengthen my arches and instep and create a better profile on toe?

You need to take your foot type into account. A wide foot isn't a problem, as long as the pointe shoe fits. However, a low arch or flat foot can inhibit your ability to rise up on pointe, according to New York podiatrist Dr. Thomas Novella. You can often gain a few degrees of flexibility with strengthening exercises in physical therapy, but this will not change the bony structure of your instep. Dr. Novella advises dancers with flat feet (who tend to have loose ligaments) to avoid so-called toe stretchers that may create instability. Find out about your options...
