BLUE RIVER - The packed crowd had barely settled into their seats. Visiting North Lake was still shaking off the stiffness of a four-hour bus ride.

And, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, No. 1 McKenzie snatched control of the game with a tenaciousness befitting a state championship contender and never let up.

After scoring the game's first 19 points, the Eagles sprinted to a 116-38 victory over North Lake on Saturday in the first round of the OSAA Class 1A boys basketball playoffs at McKenzie High School.

The emphatic victory punched the Eagles' ticket to the state tournament in Baker City, where they will open against North Clackamas Christian at 8:15 p.m. Thursday.

"For a small town, this means a lot," McKenzie coach Mike Wiley said. "I'm sure we'll have a bunch of them with us at state."
