These past few years have been boom times for civic education in this country. Not a month goes by without one or another of our leaders taking to some crudely constructed soapbox to deliver yet another lecture on Our Values: Why and How They Must be Defended. The highpoint was in 2005 when, in the wake of the 7 July bombings in London, Treasurer Peter Costello laid it out for Muslims: 'If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country which practices it, perhaps then, that's a better option'.
