Dog and Bear: Two Friends, Three Stories written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, published by Neal Porter Books/Roaring Brook Press

Although humor is difficult to achieve in any picture book, it is easier to create than emotion, which so easily disintegrates into sentimentality. In a book that manages to incorporate both humor and a great deal of heart, three stories delineate the relationship between two endearing friends--a stuffed toy bear and a playful dachshund. Each of the stories has its own tension and resolution. Every page in the book has been given a unique design; the engaging illustrations with black ink outlines extend the sensibility of the text; and all the parts work together seamlessly. Combining simplicity with panache, emotion with graphic brilliance, this friendship saga fits comfortably alongside such classics as Frog and Toad Together and George and Martha. A.S.
