HARRISBURG - Philip Scranage was concerned that his town didn't have its own newspaper, so he started one himself. Now, in between school, Boy Scouts, church and trumpet practice, the 11-year-old runs the Harrisburg Times, a four-page newsletter with a circulation of about 45.
"I've always kind of wanted to do this," says Scranage over a glass of milk in his home near Harrisburg. "It just seemed like a good idea."
Scranage (rhymes with scrimmage) is publisher, editor, page designer, advertising salesman and chief reporter all rolled into one. His first issue of the Times, published in early January, included a preview of the Super Bowl, a weather report, a Groundhog Day contest and a story about report cards...
