McKenzie returned four starters off last year's boys basketball team that reached the 1A state tournament, but all anyone seemed to notice was the one who left.

Drew Wiley, the 6-foot-7 all-state wing who has signed with Oregon, transferred to Thurston, but his former teammates are once again in the hunt for a league title and return trip to state. McKenzie is 13-1 and leading the Mountain West League.

"The No. 1 thing we talked about at the beginning of the year was to not let one person define McKenzie and who we are, and what kind of success we've had, and what we will do this year," second-year coach Glenn Johannes said. "The kids have been using that as motivation. They have a bit of a chip on their shoulder."

Even Johannes admits to being caught somewhat off guard by McKenzie's 19-2 overall mark.
